Weather Now, Climate Later

64 reads·2 min read
Do you know the difference between weather and climate? Weather is what happens outside right now or today. It is what you see when you look out your window. Weather can change very fast. One day it might be sunny and warm. The next day it could be rainy and cool. We talk about weather when we say, "It is cold today!" or "It will snow this afternoon." Things like sunshine, rain, snow, wind, and clouds are all parts of the weather. Climate is different. Climate is the usual weather pattern in a place over a very long time, like many years. It is like the average weather for a region. For example, a desert has a hot and dry climate because it is almost always hot and dry there. A place near the North Pole has a cold climate because it is usually very cold, even in summer. Scientists look at weather records for many years to understand a place's climate. So, weather is what you get on a specific day, but climate is what you expect for a whole season or year in that area.
