How We Hear Sounds
76 reads·2 min read
Have you ever wondered how you hear a bird sing or a bell ring? It all starts with vibrations. When something makes a sound, it actually moves back and forth very fast. These tiny, quick movements are called vibrations. Imagine a drum. When you hit it, the drum skin shakes. This shaking is a vibration.
These vibrations cannot just float through the air by themselves. They need to push on something. When the drum skin vibrates, it pushes the air molecules right next to it. These air molecules then push the next ones, and those push the next, like a chain reaction. This creates waves of energy that travel through the air in all directions, moving away from the sound source.
These sound waves eventually reach your ears. Your ears are amazing! Inside your ear, there is a tiny eardrum. When the sound waves hit your eardrum, it starts to vibrate, just like the drum skin. These vibrations are then sent to tiny bones and then to your brain. Your brain then understands these signals as the sounds you hear. So, next time you hear music, remember it's all thanks to vibrations traveling through the air!
