A Day We Remember

In New York City, two towers once stood very tall. People called them the Twin Towers. Thousands of people worked there each day.
On September 11, 2001, a very sad thing happened. The towers came down. Many people did not come home that day.
Firefighters and police officers ran toward the buildings to help. Strangers helped strangers. People all over the country sent food, blankets, and letters.
Later, workers found a small pear tree under the broken stone. It was burned and broken. People cared for it for years until it grew strong again. Today that tree stands where the towers were, beside two quiet pools of water. The names of the people are carved around the edges.
